VODA, facilitated by artists residency with Rogers Art Loft, Las Vegas, provided a telephonic channel for any person to connect to and receive humanistically-unifying avowals from American speech acts during the COVID-19 Pandemic. These wisdoms were carefully extracted from their original contexts, woven into accessible dialogue and delivered in verbal exchange between the artist as operator and a caller. Specifically, the language was taken from prominent speech acts given during historical pandemics and brought about experiences of solace through a digital encounter in the wake of periods of enforced isolation, financial loss, illness, grief, and fear. The connection between both the pandemic and the Presidential election (in which this model was applied in the later work DREAM OPERATOR) were inexorably linked.
